Placement

The MHA Program begins working with student on their preparation and placement in a professional healthcare administrative role on day one of their academic program. This work is student lead and faculty supported. The Program works to provide students exposure to as many areas of specialization and organizations as possible as well as opportunities to meet and network with professionals from all over the country. Students are challenged to explore and reflect on their career interests and passions.

The Program’s Faculty Advisors work to support students in selecting, applying, interviewing, and negotiating post-graduate fellowships, careers within all areas of healthcare, or continuing their graduate education. The schedule for each varies which allows students to pursue both if desired.  Details follow on fellowship and career options.

The MHA Program reports placement outcomes to our accreditor, CAHME. See the CAHME webpage https://cahme.org/programs/?texasamres for information.

Fellowships

All eligible MHA students are encouraged to compete for administrative fellowships as part of their post-graduate experience. An administrative fellowship can be thought of as a 12-18 month extension of one’s learning experience. After graduating, these positions allow for individuals to work within an organization to hone the skills they have learned during their graduate studies. The administrative fellowship application/selection process typically begins during the second semester of the first year and continues through the fall and spring semesters of the second year.

Post graduate fellowships are—

  • well planned, with enough flexibility to allow fellows to develop their own learning opportunities consistent with their needs and that of the organization.
  • include a high degree of involvement by the preceptor(s).
  • offer a number of ways the fellow can take part in active, hands-on, substantive projects that foster development of verbal, interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • expose fellows to management decision-making processes and board of trustee activities also is important and integral to the fellowship.

Fellows—

  • are able to observe effective leadership and develop leadership skills.
  • learn to work independently as their leadership skills grow and develop.
  • are treated as professionals and colleagues, not as students or interns.
  • are able to integrate health care management theory and application.
  • have development objectives, as well as timely, candid, outcome-oriented evaluations by the preceptor and other leaders in the organization.
  • Are expose fellows to the operational, strategic and financial challenges at all levels of the organization.
